The majestic, arching shade tree planted along countless streets
across the United States until Dutch Elm disease decimated elm populations
beginning in the 1950s. American elms are native to eastern North
America and grow a distinctive vase-shaped canopy on a tall trunk
with ridged bark. |

Foliage: medium green turning to yellow in fall
Fruit: small winged seeds
Soil: deep soils, with neutral ph
Water: medium
Sun: full
Problems: leaf beetles, elm scale, Dutch elm disease

Comments: Good for parks or large lots, may damage
sidewalks when confined; tolerates wind.
