This ornamental small tree, a cultivated relative of the wild chokecherry
that grows along streams and rivers throughout the Upper Arkansas
Valley, has leaves that sprout green, then turn dark red or almost
purple as they mature. The fruit of wild chokecherry is used for
jelly, syrup, and wine. |

Problems: tends to sucker
Comments: Mayday Tree (Prunus padus) and Amur Chokecherry
(Prunus maakii) are closely-related and very similar.
