This fast-growing tree, native to central and eastern North America,
has an upright form, a lacy canopy and strongly horizontal branches.
The species has formidable thorns; “inermis” is a thornless
variety. |

Comments: This tree was often substituted for American
elm after Dutch elm disease. Variety “shademaster” may
be best for parkways.
