Pine, Scotch Pinus sylvestris

The native pine of the once-abundant Caledonian pine forests of Scotland and northern England. Scotch Pine is a popular Christmas tree for its natural pyramidal shape when young.

Height: 30’
Crown Spread: 25’
Growth Rate: fast at first,
then moderate
Foliage: Needles are two to three inches long, in bundles of two,
turning yellowish green in winter
Fruit: gray, egg-shaped cones to two inches long
Soil: well drained, sandy, soil, does best in acidic conditions
Water: medium
Sun: full
Problems: pine sawfly, winter browning, stressed by hot and dry summers
Comments: Variety “French Blue” keeps blue color of needles in
winter, other varieties include weeping and dwarf forms; foliage sparse at maturity.
Street Tree: limited use
